Unity and reconciliation

a model for reconciliation and community healing

Historically the eastern Congo has always been ethnically polarized. Moreover, it is among the most Christianized area in the region. Nominally speaking at least, it displays a remarkable demographic expansion of the Christian movements. Despite fraught tensions which could rise, ethnic groups cohabited peacefully for centuries. Embedded cultural values and religious practices played a central role in fostering unity and reconciliation thus preventing conflicts to go beyond control. However, a swift degradation of entrenched cultural and religious values of unity and love in society, which saw communities adopting the culture of violence as the best alternative to engaging conflicts thus making killing a commonplace, poses the enigma about the level of inconceivable ‘‘Christianity-violence’ ’cohabitation beyond common-sense.

Therefore, A Cup for Humanity adopts a model for reconciliation and community healing which addresses major precursors of violence such as ethnicity, a power struggle among others. It engages intercommunity dialogues by promoting the culture of peace in the region and beyond. Furthermore, it promotes the place and role of the Christian message of peace in directing and or redirecting conflicting ideologies.

Next, it will introduce new aspects of understanding the interplay between socio-economic and political factors in designing schemes that would inculcate or mitigate ideologies that have triggered the use of violence.
